Causes and triggers

Contact eczema occurs when the skin comes into direct contact with the allergen. It belongs to the group of allergies known as "delayed allergies" (Type IV Allergy) because the allergic reaction first occurs 24 to 48 hours after contact with the allergen.

Frequent triggers of contact eczema include metals (nickel in jewelry or coins); perfumes in cosmetics; certain chemicals (oils, paints); and dyes or preservatives (clothing, hair products).
