Therapy

Hay fever can be alleviated with the help of medications, including:

  • Antihistimines (Sprays, tablets, or drops)
  • Anti-allergy eyedrops
  • Cortisone (Spray)
  • Leukotriene modifiers
  • Anti-swelling nose drops (these should be not be used for longer than ten days, as they can be habit-forming)

Allergen immunotherapy can bring long-term relief from allergies. Over a period of at least three years, the patient is given ever-increasing doses of the allergen. The immune system reacts to the allergen and eventually becomes used to it – this means the immune system no longer attacks the allergen, and the allergic reactions are drastically reduced or, in the best case, disappear altogether.
