Symptoms and implications

Typical symptoms of an insect sting allergy appear within seconds or minutes of the sting. Symptoms include:

• Massive swelling around the sting (more than 10 cm; swelling lasts longer than24 hours)
• Itching, redness and hives over the entire body
• Swelling of face and throat

In rare cases the following symptoms also appear:

• Runny nose
• Watering eyes
• Dizziness
• Increased heartbeat
• Nausea and vomiting
• Problems speaking and swallowing
• Shortness of breath

Anaphylactic shock – sudden drop in blood pressure, shock and reduced circulation - can be deadly without immediate medical attention!
