Tips

Tips

If you know that you are allergic to insect venom, always carry an emergency treatment kit with you! It can save your life in case of anaphylactic shock.

In addition, the following tips can minimize your risk of being stung.

  • If you can, avoid places where bees and wasps are found: flowers, trees, and plants in summer; ripe, fallen fruit; garbage cans.
  • If a wasp or bee comes near you, try to remain calm. Don’t strike at it or wave it away, and don’t make any sudden movements.
  • If you’re going to spend time outdoors, try to cover as much of your body as you can with long clothing. But be careful: don’t wear wide, flowing clothes, and try to avoid both black and very colourful clothing – the insects might mistake you for a flower!
  • Don’t use strongly scented body care products, perfumes or hairsprays. These can attract insects.
  • Insects often invite themselves to a picnic – especially if food, in particular sweets or meat, is lying around in the open air.
  • Keep your shoes on outdoors! Many wasps build nests underground, and small flowers such as clover are very popular with bees.
