Treatment for lactose intolerance involves a lactose-free or reduced-lactose diet.
Different patients can tolerate different amounts of lactose; as a rule, patients on a lactose-free diet should not ingest more than one gram of lactose per day (the amount in 20 ml. of milk, or in one teaspoon of cream cheese.) A reduced-lactose diet allows for 8-10 grams of lactose per day – the amount in 200 ml. of milk.
