Mastocytosis is not infectious and in most cases not inherited.
Cutaneous mastocytosis occurs mostly in childhood and disappears of its own accord during puberty. Systemic mastocytosis generally begins in adulthood.
The progression of systemic mastocytosis varies. Most patients have a benign form of the disease, with a good prognosis for recovery. Aggressive forms of systemic mastocytosis are rare.
