Therapy

Many patients with mastocytosis have no symptoms, and require no treatment.

Fundamental to the treatment of mastocytosis is the avoidance of known triggers. Medications are also available which reduce the number of "mediators", such as histamine, released by the mast cells, or which block the mediators so that they do not cause symptoms.

Mastocytosis is a heterogeneous illness involving different reactions to different triggers – therefore it is important for patients to recognize all possible trigger factors and avoid them. Triggers can include allergens, insect venom, food items, environmental factors and/or emotional stress.
