Diagnosis

Diagnosis

If you experience any of these symptoms after exposure to sunlight, you should consult a dermatologist before you go on a beach holiday. Following a detailed discussion of your symptoms and perhaps a light test, you will find out whether you suffer from a sunlight intolerance. With the right treatment, most patients can enjoy their holiday.

Polymorphous photodermatosis
A section of the skin is exposed to UVA light, to find out whether this causes the patient’s symptoms. However, this test often does not provoke the symptoms. Photoallergic dermatitis should be ruled out.

Mallorca Acne
Photoallergic dermatitis should be ruled out.

Phototoxic dermatitis
A light test that gradually increases the intensity of the UV light can determine the minimal dose of sunlight that causes the phototoxic reaction.

Photoallergic dermatitis
A so-called photo patch test can help determine the cause. Substances suspected of causing the symptoms (e.g. sunscreen) are applied to the skin of the back with patches, and exposed to UV light.

Light urticaria
If you suffer from light urticaria, a light test will cause hives and itching of the skin.
