Allergies have drastically increased in the last few decades, especially in industralised western countries. Many different factors are responsible; one important factor is the rising impact of allergens in the household. Household allergens are substances found indoors – in offices or private living quarters – that lead to allergic reactions such as asthma, hay fever, or dermatitis. Below is an overview of the most prevalent household allergens, and how to avoid them.
Especially prevalent in the household are dust mites, molds, animal hair, and pollen. These are year-round problems for allergy patients, although seasonal changes are possible in some cases (pollen, mold). Contact with house pets can also cause an allergic reaction. Especially problematic for allergy sufferers are allergens in public spaces that cannot be avoided, e.g. hotels.
The concentration of allergens in a household depends on the climate and the habits of the inhabitants. For instance, a damp, seldom-aired flat provides a perfect environment for mold spores. Carpets and bedsheets made from synthetic materials are common sources of dust mites.
