Therapy

Treatment for lactose intolerance involves a lactose-free or reduced-lactose diet.

Different patients can tolerate different amounts of lactose; as a rule, patients on a lactose-free diet should not ingest more than one gram of lactose per day (the amount in 20 ml. of milk, or in one teaspoon of cream cheese.) A reduced-lactose diet allows for 8-10 grams of lactose per day – the amount in 200 ml. of milk.

However, lactose is not only found in milk, but also in:

  • Chocolate, nougat, and ice cream
  • Frozen meals or prepared food products (mashed potato mix, baking mixes)
  • Many meat and sausage products
  • Baked goods, and in some breads and rolls
  • Some flavourings
  • Margarine (read the ingredient list)
  • Many medications, artificial sweeteners, and toothpastes
