Progression

Chronic urticaria can last for months or even years. Acute urticaria disappears within six weeks.

The prognosis for chronic urticaria is good. In a majority of cases, the causes can be treated and/or the triggers for an outbreak of hives can be identified and avoided.

If this is not possible, the symptoms can be treated with medications.

Even an untreated chronic urticaria will eventually heal on its own – unfortunately, this can take years.
