Symptoms and effects

The most common symptoms of a food allergy are:

  • Itching in the mouth and throat
  • Skin rash or hives
  • Digestive problems (vomiting, diarrhea, stomachache)
  • Asthma

Pollen-based food allergies often result in the so-called "oral allergy syndrome." Symptoms include an uncomfortable crawling feeling on the tongue and throat, and itching of the gums and ears. The symptoms are uncomfortable, but in most cases harmless.

Swelling in the mouth or throat is a sign of a dangerous food allergy.

If you suspect that certain foods cause allergy symptoms, it’s best to avoid those foods altogether and visit an allergologist.
