Once the causes of chronic urticaria are known, therapy is straightforward.
For instance, if an infection is responsible for the urticaria, it can be easily treated.
Sometimes it is not possible to treat the causes of chronic urticaria. In this case, treatment focuses on alleviating the symptoms. Many modern medications are effective and have no side effects: for instance, modern antihistamines do not cause drowsiness.
The specific treatment varies from patient to patient and depends on the severity of symptoms and the patient’s needs.
A purely symptom-based therapy makes sense for patients who rarely suffer from urticaria, or who do not have severe symptoms. In this case, a long and difficult search for the underlying cause is usually not needed.
