"Sun allergy" – dangerous, but treatable

Summer time – the best time of year? Not for people suffering from a so-called "sun allergy". "Sun allergy" (not a medical term) refers to a group of itchy and painful skin inflammations resulting from those sought-after rays.

The problem is seldom a true allergy, but rather an intolerance to sunlight.  Itching wheals or bumps on the skin make life difficult for the afflicted.  Fortunately, a series of effective treatments and preventive measures can help.  These include antihistamines, cortisone creams, and special sun protection, and must be individually tailored by a specialist to fit the patient’s needs.
"With the right therapy, patients can enjoy summer again", says Prof. Dr. med. Torsten Zuberbier, Head of the Allergy Centre Charité and of the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF).
