The European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation has established an office in Greece in the Allergy Unit at the University General Hospital "Attikon". The foundation will benefit from a partnership with renowned allergy expert Dimitrios Kalogeromitros, Associate Professor at the University of Athens.
“Greece can contribute significantly to a better understanding of allergies and to improvements in treatment possibilities”, Associate Professor Dimitrios Kalogeromitros explains. “We have particular experience with allergies involving certain specific allergens, such as olive and Parietaria, which are beginning to spread to regions even farther north. The entire European allergy and research community can benefit from our specialised knowledge.”
Allergies are on the rise in Greece, as everywhere in Europe. About three million people in Greece will develop some kind of allergy during their life, (e.g. hay fever, urticaria etc). Seventeen percent of the Greek population is sensitised to Parietaria, a common allergen in the Mediterranean region, a sensitization that often occurs in combination with other pollen sensitisation. Almost 3% of the population is sensitised to olive pollen, largely cultivated in Greece.
Associate Prof. Dr. Kalogeromitros is head of the Allergy Unit at the University General Hospital ‘Attikon’ in Athens. In addition to his clinical work, he is involved in researching allergic skin diseases such as urticaria (hives). He holds a position as a Visiting Professor at the Charité Medical University in Berlin as well as at Tufts University in Boston.
The non-profit European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF) has been active since 2003 in working to improve conditions for allergy sufferers and for European society as a whole for the long term. The foundation is located at the Allergy Centre Charité in Berlin and headed by Prof. Dr. med. Torsten Zuberbier. The European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation has offices in Germany, France, Italy, Denmark, Great Britain and recently in Greece.
