Cutaneous mastocytosis is characterized by small brown-red flecks on the skin which can turn to hives if they are scratched.
Because the symptoms resemble urticaria (hives), cutaneous mastocytosis is sometimes referred to as "urticaria pigmentosa".
The symptoms of systemic mastocytosis depend on the location of the mast cell proliferation. Symptoms can include headaches, bone pain, itching, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, or severe allergic reaction.
Some patients only experience minimal discomfort, while others have severe symptoms that require constant treatment with medication.
