ARD Wissen – What kind of allergy do you have?

30 million people in Germany suffer from allergies.
By 2050, that number could rise to half of Europe’s population.

Why are allergies on the rise so dramatically? –
Science journalist Lena Ganschow explores this question in the ARD documentary “What Allergy Do You Have? Why More and More People Are Having Allergic Reactions.”

The April 13, 2026, edition of “Tagesschau” also addresses the topic and highlights how severely allergic diseases limit quality of life—both physically and psychosocially.

Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Torsten Zuberbier, Chairman of the ECARF Foundation, speaks in the documentary and particularly emphasizes the fears and concerns that allergic reactions can cause in those affected. After all, anyone who has experienced a severe allergic episode often lives with a constant sense of uncertainty in their daily life—a burden that goes far beyond physical symptoms.
The fact that ARD and Tagesschau are drawing attention to this issue sends an important message: Allergies are not a marginal phenomenon, but a growing health challenge that must be taken seriously.
