Managing Allergies on Class Trips: All Students Should Go

Teachers and parents know that a class trip has to be carefully planned. Beate Deckelmann, who has been employed as a school nurse at Berlin Brandenburg International School (BBIS) for many years, speaks to the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF) about the best way to take the needs of children with allergies into consideration.

In the two-part interview, Deckelmann explains what teachers can do to prepare a class trip including children with allergies. She provides her own practical tips: What information should be given to a youth hostel about students with allergies? How should the cook be assisted in putting together a meal plan? What advance preparations should be made by teachers and parents? Which precautionary measures should be taken at the destination?

You can read part 1 of the interview at ecarf.org. Part 2 will appear on 8 June.
